Akhunovo Menhirs

The Akhunovo menhirs are a megalithic complex about a kilometre southwest of Akhunovo village in Uchalinsky District, on a gentle slope by the river. The site has 13 upright granite blocks from under a metre to about two metres high; some form a ring around two central stones — a rare type for the steppe Trans-Urals. The complex was found in 1996 by a Chelyabinsk University ethnographic team with local resident Zh. T. Aitov; in 2003 it was excavated by the Arkaim centre. Digs indicate an age of over three thousand years and Late Bronze Age contexts. There is no museum infrastructure: arrive by car, do not move stones, and do not light fires by the menhirs. A natural day-pair in the district is Lake Urgún or Lake Aushkul. The stones stand in an open landscape, so the experience depends on seeing the whole arrangement rather than on built infrastructure. The central blocks and their surrounding group retain research value in their present positions: do not climb them, build cairns, or leave ribbons and coins. The Late Bronze Age dating belongs to the complex’s archaeological context, but its precise purpose should not be presented as settled fact; popular “observatory” claims remain interpretations. Treat access as a field trip: after rain the ground changes quickly and services are scarce. Bring water, navigation and wind protection, and only pair it with other Uchaly District sites if daylight allows. The practical details in this card are part of the route, not a formality: they help match the season, road and visitor experience. They are not a promise of constant access, because natural conditions, protection rules and institutional schedules can change. Before setting out, save an offline map, check the weather and leave time for the return. On site, use existing paths, respect residents and staff, and resolve any access doubt by choosing the safer option. Scholarly literature links the complex to Late Bronze Age horizons (including Cherkaskul and Mezhovka pottery); popular “observatory” labels are research interpretations, not an on-site museum attraction. The stones stand in an open field with no ticket office: do not move blocks, light fires beside them, or leave litter — this is an archaeological site, not a photo set.
