An alpine trail in the Aktru valley to the glacier tongue — a classic North Chuy Range route away from resort bustle.

Aktru Glacier Trail

The Aktru river valley on the north slope of the North Chuy Range is known to climbers and trekkers as a base for glacier and peak routes. The trail to the Aktru glacier tongue crosses moraines, streams, and boulder fields; sharp peaks and snowfields remain even in summer. Not a casual sight: base camps sit near two thousand metres, weather shifts within an hour, and final sections need solid boots and energy. Here high-altitude Altai landscape is clear — ice, rock, and narrow alpine meadows. Several field bases operate in the valley for day trips to the glacier or multi-day pass links. No mass services — power and signal are limited, but fewer crowds than busy tract-side valleys. Suited to travellers who have driven the Chuysky tract and want several days in the mountains with a pack, not only roadside viewpoints. Allow acclimatisation — rapid altitude gain tires even fit hikers. The glacier is wild nature: do not walk on ice without gear and experience; crevasses and rockfall are real. Viewing from moraine and marked trails is safer than unsupervised ice travel.

How to get there

From Aktash on the Chuysky tract turn into the Aktru valley; dirt road to bases, then on foot along the trail to the glacier moraine.

Best season

July–August for the glacier approach; June and September in dry weather with experience

Travel tips & stories

  • Spend at least one night at base altitude before the glacier — reduces altitude sickness.

  • Pack wind- and waterproof layers — rain and gusts are common in the valley.

  • Trekking poles and grippy soles help on boulder terrain.

  • Drink only from trusted sources or filter stream water.

  • Tell the base your route and return time — signal is weak higher in the valley.
