A town of 1348 from the Nikon Chronicle on both banks of the Oka: Dormition cathedrals of the 17th–19th centuries, a relict pine forest and ancient hillforts.
Aleksin
Aleksin is one of the oldest towns of the Upper Oka lands: first mentioned in 1348 in the Nikon Chronicle, and by legend founded even earlier, at the turn of the 13th century, by Prince Daniil Alexandrovich. The town stands on both banks of the Oka, 59 kilometres from Tula and 150 from Moscow. What to see: the Dormition ensemble with the Old Dormition cathedral of 1688 and the New one of 1813, the St Nicholas church of 1787, and the local history museum in merchant Maslov's mansion — a federal monument. Nearby are the ruins of the 1773 Petrovskoye estate and the Gothic Chertkov-Paskhalov estate in Kolosovo. Around Aleksin lies a dense layer of antiquity: the Ilyinskoye and Petrovskoye hillforts, Lysaya Gora, burial mounds. A bridge crosses the Oka to join the town's parts, and along the river stretches a relict pine forest — a nature monument.
How to get there
By train on the Kaluga–Plekhanovo line (Aleksin station; several suburban pairs a day) or by car from Tula/Kaluga across the bridge.
Best season
May to September: the forest and hillforts in the dry season.
Travel tips & stories
