The oblast's only federally listed historic settlement: merchant Arzamas with a giant cathedral, literary ties and a spicy chronological layer going back to 1578.
Arzamas
Arzamas has been a town since 1578 and the centre of Nizhny's right-bank country; since 2023 it has been listed among federal historic settlements — the only one in the oblast. The town gave its name to the literary circle 'Arzamas' that included Pushkin and Zhukovsky, and to Gaidar's children's country — the writer grew up here. The town's main vertical is the Resurrection cathedral, a giant on the central square conceived as an answer to Petersburg: the scale of a cathedral in a provincial town still puzzles first-time visitors. Around lie merchant streets, museum estates and atmospheric courtyards. Arzamas is a convenient base for the right bank: the Ichalki caves, Vadskoye lake and Boldino are all within reach. The town's virtue is that it lives an ordinary life around the cathedral — without ticket booths at every step.
How to get there
112 kilometres south of Nizhny Novgorod by highway; roads to Boldino, Ichalki and Vad branch out from Arzamas.
Best season
All year round; the cathedral in snow is a winter classic.
