Atysh Waterfall

Atysh Waterfall (from Bashkir “striking, shooting”) in Beloretsky District is the outlet of the underground Atysh River from a grotto in Mount Yash-Kuz-tash on the steep right bank of the Lemeza. The jet falls about four metres into plunge pools at the cliff foot. It has been a hydrological nature monument since 1965 (about 6.6 ha). The classic walk starts at rail stop “71 km” on the Ufa–Inzer line, with fords of the Inzer and Lemeza. This is not a fitted amusement park: the route is forested, fords are serious after rain, and winter needs skis or a snowmobile. Driving to nearby villages (Verkhniye Lemezy and others) still leaves a long walk. Known among Ural travellers, it stays off the republic’s usual postcard top-ten such as Kapova Cave. Atysh is compelling less for the height of its drop than for its mechanism: underground water emerges from a grotto above the Lemeza valley and immediately forms the fall and plunge pools. The approach is therefore a real forest crossing even if you drive to a nearby village. The rail option from the “71 km” stop is useful without a car but includes fords; depth, current and safe passage must be judged on the day, not from an old track. In spring or after rain, turning back may be the sound decision. Do not treat this as an easy family walk without water-crossing experience. Set a return time, waterproof spare clothing and electronics, and use only permitted, already established campsites. The practical details in this card are part of the route, not a formality: they help match the season, road and visitor experience. They are not a promise of constant access, because natural conditions, protection rules and institutional schedules can change. Before setting out, save an offline map, check the weather and leave time for the return. On site, use existing paths, respect residents and staff, and resolve any access doubt by choosing the safer option. Plunge pools have formed at the cliff foot over centuries; from them the Atysh continues into the Lemeza. The fall is modest — about four metres — but an underground river exiting a grotto is rare in the Southern Urals. The classic is the train to “71 km” and a walking day with fords: spare shoes, dry bags and a sober water-level check are essential. This is a prepared hike, not a roadside stop.
