Ruins of a thirteenth-century Teutonic castle on the Vistula Lagoon shore.
Balga Castle
On the shore of the Vistula Lagoon, in Veseloye village in the southwest of Kaliningrad Oblast, lie the ruins of Balga Castle — one of the region's best-known Teutonic outposts. The fort was founded in the thirteenth century and long guarded a strategic line on the lagoon, controlling approaches from the water and overland paths along the coast. Today overgrown wall fragments and a castle hill remain, with views over the lagoon and open coastal space. This is the classic Kaliningrad landscape of "fort by the water": stone masonry, grass, occasional visitors — a different rhythm from the Baltic resort beaches. Access is easiest by car from Kaliningrad or villages on the southwest coast; local roads can be uneven in places. The visit pairs naturally with Brandenburg Castle in Ushakovo — both lie on the same lagoon line, about 40–50 minutes apart by car. May to September and daylight hours are best. The ruins have no roof or fencing — do not climb crumbling masonry.
