Belgorod Chalk Hills

The chalk hills near Belgorod are one of the oblast's most recognisable landscapes. White slopes of Upper Cretaceous deposits are visible from approaches to the city and from the opposite bank of the Seversky Donets. Chalk lies close to the surface; outcrops form terraces, ravines and ledges. For geologists and nature lovers this is an open-air classroom — layers, cracks and scree are visible to the naked eye. Parts of the area are protected as a nature monument; commercial writing chalk was mined at some sites — the Zelenaya Polyana quarry on the city's northern edge has been known since the late 20th century. Not a beach or theme park: outcrops crumble and ledges are unstable. View from marked points and trails; do not climb vertical slopes. Start from central Belgorod and combine with Nikitsky Spring and Dubovoye — all show the chalk belt of the southern Central Russian Upland.
