Biryuch Oak Grove

Biryuch oak grove is a major forest massif in Krasnogvardeysky District near Biryuch town. Against the steppe expanses of the oblast's south-east, island oak woods are rare; old pedunculate oaks survive here. Biryuch was founded in 1705 as a steppe-edge town; the name may derive from a founder's nickname or the toponym "biryuchya yaruga". Forests around the town supplied construction and shipbuilding timber from the 18th century. The grove is not a reserve with eco-trails — rather a field route for foresters and lovers of quiet. In spring and autumn the contrast between steppe beyond the edge and shade under the crowns is striking. Biryuch retains 19th-century historic fabric — the Stankevich estate, cathedral square, stone shops. The oak grove adds nature to the town route.
