Naryshkin-Turgenev Caves (Bolkhov)

Naryshkin-Turgenev caves are hewn in chalk near Bolkhov, Oryol Oblast. Linked to monastic life and runaway serfs by one account, chalk quarrying by another; the name reflects Naryshkin and Turgenev family ties. Underground passages, halls and niches extend hundreds of metres; walls are white, friable, sometimes crumbling. Temperature stays cool even in summer. Not a show cave: lighting partial or absent, routes not always marked. Visit at your own risk, preferably with a local guide or Bolkhov tour group. Geology plus history suits industrial and dark tourism — but do not enter without a torch and proper shoes. Znamensky Monastery and Bolkhov old centre nearby; caves first, then town. Torch, sturdy shoes and clothes you can chalk-stain required. Do not disturb crumbling walls.
