Chagall House Museum (Borovsk)

Borovsk on the Protva is one of the oblast's oldest towns; in 1900 the Chagall family lived here for several months after moving from Vitebsk. The wooden riverside house is a memorial museum on the "Borovsk — city of artists" route. The display is modest: period interior, photos, documents and the artist's early years, St Petersburg study and path to Paris. Borovsk for Chagall is family history and Protva hills, not mature work. Since the 16th century the town is tied to monasteries and stone building on steep slopes; from the house-museum you descend to the embankment and climb to Pafnutiev Monastery. Borovsk is often paired with Tarusa as a Russian modernist and artists' colony point. Seasonal hours; shorter in winter. Borovsk is ~25 km from Kaluga — car or bus from the oblast centre is easiest. Nearby are Borovsk walls with the "Faces of the City" graffiti project and Protva valley viewpoints. Combine with Suvorov's Konchanskoye estate and Polotnyany Zavod (~35 km). Follow museum photo rules; flash and tripods usually banned. Hilly town — practical shoes for house, monastery and embankment.
