Buturlinovka Chalk Hills

Buturlinovka district at steppe and forest-steppe border is known for chalk outcrops in ravines and valley slopes. White chalk walls contrast with green steppe grass — a recognisable central oblast motif. Chalk hills here are not a ticketed reserve but open landscape from field roads. Geologists and nature lovers come for photos, fossil shells and steppe flora. Buturlinovka is a 19th-century town and district centre. Start routes from town: fuel, supplies, local museum info. Key spots are a few kilometres on dirt roads. Spring ravines flower with steppe herbs; summer is hot with little shade. Autumn gives soft light on white chalk — best for photos. Winter outcrops are visible but access may be uncleared. Combine with Bobrov (~45 km) or Ostrogozhsk (~80 km) — steppe and river valley route. Do not damage outcrops: chalk is fragile, slopes may collapse. No smoking in dry windy weather — steppe fire risk.
