Cape Lopatka

Cape Lopatka is Kamchatka's southernmost point on the Pacific. Sea of Okhotsk and Pacific waters meet here; wind and swell are often stronger than in Petropavlovsk bays. An automatic lighthouse stands on the cape; nearby are remnants of Cold War defence posts. The road is long and seasonal; the last tens of kilometres are dirt through tundra. Lopatka is not a beach resort but a land's end for open coast and vast horizon. Weather shifts in minutes; fog and rain are common even in summer. Include the cape in a multi-day south Kamchatka route with Kurilskoye Lake and hot springs — not a day trip from the city.
