The town grew from Peter the Great's early-eighteenth-century fortress of Oranienburg, later known as Ranenburg. The surrounding estate was granted to Alexander Menshikov, whose palace now houses the local history museum. The historic centre also preserves the Trinity Cathedral and the layered memory of a frontier settlement, imperial project and provincial town.
