Chara Sands

Chara Sands lie in a basin among Kodar mountains and larch taiga. Dune fields cover tens of square kilometres; yellow barchans contrast sharply with green forest and snowy peaks. A unique Siberian scene — dry air and sand ridges inside, taiga and slopes outside. Hard access: usually rail to Novaya Chara, then ATV or boat on the Chara River. Tent camping; carry water, fuel and food. Cold nights even in summer — warm sleeping bag and wind protection. Dunes collapse on steep slopes — no sliding without a helmet; avoid weakened crests. Pack out all waste — one of Russia's rare such landscapes. Often combined in multi-day routes with the Kodar Range — needs preparation, time and organised transfer, not a one-hour roadside stop.

How to get there

Rail to Novaya Chara, then organised transfer or Chara River route; solo access without local support is difficult.

Best season

July–August for combined routes
