Desnogorsk Atomic Town

Desnogorsk was founded in the 1970s as a satellite of Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant. Typical Soviet layout: straight streets, micro-districts, panel blocks, squares and a nuclear workers' memorial. Not a closed city but infrastructure serves residents, not tourists. Interest lies in late-USSR urban archaeology: clean avenues, few cars, a sense of frozen time. The plant is not visible from town; NPP tours if any need separate approval — do not expect spontaneous access. Southern route point with Porechye-Rossosh reserve and wooden churches in Khislavichi and Shumyachi. Modest lodging and food; overnight possible on a long southern route. Respect residents' privacy — do not film people without asking or enter secured sites.
