A two-storey limestone cave in the Diviy Kamen cliff above the Kolva: over ten kilometres of passages, some sixty grottoes and eleven halls — the longest cave of the Kama land.

Divya Cave

The cave entrance lies in the forest, ninety metres above the waterline, on the side of the Diviy Kamen cliff facing away from the Kolva. The cave was cut in layered Permian limestones and stretches in two storeys: the total length of passages is 10,100 metres on the maps, and by newer data about 11,600. Inside are some sixty grottoes (Vetlan, Deva, Rychkov, Torty, Gvozdevsky and others) and eleven large halls stretching a kilometre and a half from west to east. There are small lakes; the largest, in the Grotto of the Sun, covers 180 square metres. Numerous flowstone formations complete the picture. The exploration history is old: the first description was made in 1770 by the academic traveller Pyotr Rychkov, a detailed map was drawn in 1940, and in 1965 the cave received the status of a geological natural monument. The name comes from 'diviy' — wondrous: a cave deep in the Kama land still lives up to it.

How to get there

Upper Kama country: from Cherdyn and Krasnovishersk by road to the settlements of the Kolva valley, then a forest trail to the Diviy Kamen cliff; the entrance is on its far side.

Best season

The cave is cool all year round; the trail to the entrance runs through forest, easier in the snow-free season.

Travel tips & stories

  • Only with headlamps, helmets and a spare battery: the passages are long, there is no signal inside.

  • Never go alone and leave your route with someone on the surface.

  • The grotto lakes are icy even in summer: do not test the depth with your foot.
