Chalk Cliffs (Dmitriev-Lgov)

Near Dmitriev-Lgov, gully and ravine slopes expose Upper Cretaceous chalk beds. White rock contrasts with Chernozem and meadow vegetation — typical for northern Kursk Oblast. The outcrops are not a formal museum but are known to geologists and locals. Some layers hold traces of ancient organisms; several points are nature monuments. The landscape is fragile: chalk crumbles into “white ravines”. Approaches are often field roads without signs — use coordinates and satellite maps. Dmitriev-Lgov works as a base for chalk sites near Fatezh and Oboyan: all three towns share the history of a Mesozoic sea that covered this land. Dmitriev-Lgov is the northern chalk hub: combine with Fatezh fossils on one loop. Few signposts — keep coordinates and ask the local museum which slopes are safe after rain.
