Dyatkovsky Chalk Quarry

The Dyatkovo area lies on the Smolensk–Moscow upland slopes with chalk, glass sand and refractory clay. Raw materials, forest and labour drew the Maltsovs' manufactory here in the late 18th century. Chalk quarries and outcrops shaped a distinctive landscape: white walls, turquoise lakes in pits, contrast with dark pine woods. Locals call such sites Bryansk Maldives for the water colour in flooded quarries. Chalk serves not only glass: construction, agriculture and cement use it too. Some quarries are recultivated — trees planted on worked-out ground. Visit with care: industrial or abandoned zones without eco-trails.
