The famous Koleno railway curve at Elan station — monument to the steam era and climbing-track engineering.
Elan Koleno Railway Bend
Elan station and the Koleno section on the South-Eastern Railway are known to rail staff and enthusiasts. The line makes a sharp climbing curve; in the steam era it demanded powerful locomotives and precise train handling. A memorial locomotive stands at the station — symbol of an era when loaded trains crossed Koleno from steppe to hub stations. Popular with photographers and rail festivals. Elan is a settlement in Bogucharsky District; minimal infrastructure. Monument and curve viewpoint take about an hour; do not linger on the platform unnecessarily — an active line. Safety first: stay off tracks; do not photograph trains too close. Regular traffic; noise and slipstream are hazardous. Combine with Boguchar museum (~60 km) or Talovaya route (~25 km) — southern steppe and industrial route. Best photos at morning or evening side light; winter snow highlights the track against steppe.
