A mountain village in central Kamchatka — base for volcano and hot-spring routes and Evenki culture.
Esso Settlement
Esso is a village in Bystrinsky District in a mountain basin at ~520 m. One of few year-round settlements in the peninsula interior reachable by road over passes. It is a base for Tolbachik, Klyuchevskaya and hot-spring trips; guesthouses, a bathhouse and a small Evenki ethnographic museum operate here. In winter Esso hosts Kamchatka dog-sled events. The drive from Petropavlovsk or Milkovo takes many hours depending on passes; winter access needs stable snow. Esso is not a one-hour sight but a multi-day expedition hub. Travellers value Esso for mountain scenery, local food and road access to remote routes without helicopters — a gateway to central Kamchatka, not a city suburb.
How to get there
~520 km from Petropavlovsk via Milkovo and passes; winter snowmobile trail.
Best season
June–September by car; February–March by snowmobile
