Plant Fossils (Fatezh)

In Fatezh District, chalk outcrops preserve imprints of ancient plants — one of Kursk Oblast's geological symbols. The site is a regional nature monument. Chalk beds lie near the surface; cracks and layers show leaf and stem traces formed tens of millions of years ago. For geologists and amateur palaeontologists it is an open-air museum without display cases. There is no large visitor centre — rather a map point for careful observation. You may photograph and study imprints but must not take samples: the monument is legally protected. Fatezh is a quiet district centre with limestone buildings; combine fossils with a town walk and trips to other chalk outcrops (Oboyan, Dmitriev-Lgov). Confirm the outcrop at Fatezh local museum: satellite maps show many white gullies while the protected plot may lack road signs. After rain chalk is slippery; do not remove samples from the nature monument.
