Gdov Fortress and Lake

Gdov lies on the oblast's western edge on Lake Gdov, linked to Lake Peipus. A 14th-century stone fortress once guarded approaches to Novgorod and western trade routes; today fragments of walls, towers and inner ground remain. The fort on a hill above water — lake, fields and distant shore in view. Restoration proceeds in stages; some parts open, others fenced. An archaeological landscape with info boards, not a busy museum ensemble. A small town of wooden and brick houses, a landing and fishing boats. Summer swimming, winter ice fishing. Minimal tourist infrastructure — a few hotels, shops, cafés. A stop on the southern Lake Peipus shore route or a westbound trip from Pskov. Allow 1–2 hours for the fortress and embankment walk. Linked to the Livonian War and later border history. For quiet lakeshore country, not central Pskov circuits.
