A Teutonic castle in Mayovka — among the best preserved in the oblast.

Georgenburg Castle

On the right bank of the Inster, in the Mayovka settlement at the northern edge of Chernyakhovsk, stand the ruins of a Teutonic castle — one of the most readable in Kaliningrad Oblast. The stone fort grew from a fourteenth-century timber-and-earth estate; sources mention rebuilding in the 1350s and around 1390. The castle changed hands more than once and withstood a siege, yet walls and towers were still recognisable into the twentieth century. It is now a regionally protected heritage site, with restoration work underway — access rules may change. The easiest approach from Chernyakhovsk is by car: Mayovka lies about 1 km to the north, look for Tsentralnaya Street. A stud farm operates nearby, giving the settlement a second, living rhythm beyond the ruins. The castle pairs well with a trip around Chernyakhovsk district, for example the Saalau ruins in Kamenskoye.
