Gerdauen Castle
Above the settlement of Zheleznodorozhny, on a hill, are the ruins of a Teutonic castle founded in 1315 — former Gerdauen. The stone stronghold was consecrated in 1325; in the fourteenth century it withstood a Lithuanian campaign, though nearby villages suffered. From the seventeenth century the castle was no longer used as a residence — a manor of Baron von Romberg rose on the site, later the von Janson estate. Mainly cellars remain from the medieval masonry; above them are fragments of a Neo-Gothic wing, stables and a well. The site is regionally protected heritage. Buses run from Kaliningrad to Zheleznodorozhny; the castle stands on Chernyakhovskogo Street on a rise above the village. May to October is best, when access roads are dry.
