Gnezdovo Archaeological Complex

The Gnezdovo archaeological complex lies 10 km west of Smolensk on the Dnieper's high right bank. One of Eastern Europe's largest early medieval settlements: over 200 hectares and thousands of burial mounds. Excavations since the 19th century uncovered dwellings, workshops, jewellery, weapons and trade goods. Layers date to the 8th–10th centuries; one theory places a key 'from the Varangians to the Greeks' trading post here. Today it is an open-air museum-reserve: mound fields, information boards and Dnieper viewpoints. Antiquity is felt across hills and meadows, not at a single sign. Allow time and sturdy shoes: paths cross hills; tall grass in summer, mud in autumn. Guided tours add context; self-guided marked routes are available. Combine with a Dnieper-route day in Smolensk — riverbank antiquity first, then the stone kremlin and cathedrals. Windy on the open bank — bring a windbreaker. Do not climb burial mounds; they are protected archaeological sites.
