One of European Russia's largest karst caves — underground halls and a river in Pinega limestone.
Golubinsky Proval Cave
Golubinsky Proval is the main cave of the Pinega karst massif and among the largest in European Russia. An underground river, halls and galleries cut through limestone; many routes need a guide and gear. Trips run from Pinega village or karst-area bases. Tour sections are limited in length and season — spring and heavy rain raise water levels and may close entry under reserve management. Cave temperature stays low year-round — bring a warm jacket and waterproof boots even in summer. Slippery steps and rocks need a torch with spare batteries; do not leave marked paths without training. Pinega karst lies in the Pinezhsky Biosphere Reserve with strict rules. Unauthorised descent into non-tourist zones is banned and dangerous due to collapses, flooding and maze-like passages. Combine with Pinega valley routes and the Krasnaya Gorka museum — a stop for travellers interested in northern geology, not only the sea coast.
How to get there
From Pinega village by local road to the karst area; then on foot with a guide to the entrance.
Best season
July–August for guided visits; confirm spring access after floods
