Blue Lake (Zyangar Kul)

Blue Lake, or Zyangar Kul, in Karmaskalinsky District by Novomusino village is a small karst spring pool about 40–45 km south of Ufa. Underground springs feed it; water stays cold year-round (about +3 to +6 °C) and often does not freeze solid in winter. The blue tint is linked to blue-clay deposits and dissolved carbonate. It is a republican hydrological nature monument; limestone cliffs rise nearby above the Uzen River. Access is from the Ufa–Orenburg / Sterlitamak highway with a turn to Novomusino, then about a kilometre through the village. Popular with Ufa residents for a short outing, yet still a local spring rather than a Bannoye-style lake resort. Swimming is icy; shores and cliffs are trampled — pack out litter and do not break the outcrops. The scale explains the lake’s character: Blue Lake is about 15 m in diameter and reaches roughly 8 m deep. It is not a large swimming lake but a compact karst bowl with a constant inflow of cold water. Temperatures around +3 to +6 °C explain why it often remains open in winter and why entering it carries real hypothermia risk. Blue clay and limestone outcrops are part of the site’s natural form, not material for extraction or improvised “treatments.” Its proximity to Ufa makes it popular, so do not park on the narrow access road, widen paths or approach cliff edges for a photograph. A short visit is complete with a walk and observation of the spring; swimming is not required.
