A 607-metre summit of the Kyshtym massif — 'the entrance to the intermontane' in Bashkir — with a ski centre on its slope and panoramas of the surrounding lakes.
Mount Yegoza
Yegoza (607.7 metres) is the highest point of the massif that also includes Mount Sugomak, west of Kyshtym, about 150 km from Yekaterinburg. The name is a Russian reworking of the Bashkir 'Yegauyzy': 'yek' means a ravine or intermontane, 'auyzy' an entrance — 'the entrance to the intermontane'; the form 'Yekaza' appeared on a 1931 map. The Yegoza ski centre operates on the slope — in winter it is Kyshtym's main attraction, in summer the slopes serve for walks and trail runs. The summit opens panoramas onto Kyshtym, the Sugomak and Irtyash lakes and the surrounding hills. Together with Sugomak, Yegoza forms a single massif: the classic weekend route runs along the crest from one summit to the other, descending to the foot of the Sugomakskaya Cave — collecting the whole Kyshtym mountain knot in one day.
How to get there
To Kyshtym (~150 km from Yekaterinburg, ~90 km from Chelyabinsk), then to the Yegoza ski centre on the western outskirts; 40–60 minutes on foot or by lift in winter.
Best season
Year-round: skiing in winter, the crest route in summer.
