Mount Sugomak

Mount Sugomak (590.8 metres) rises west of Kyshtym, forming a single massif with the taller Yegoza (607.7 metres). The summit is rocky, the slopes are covered with mixed forest harbouring rare plants. From the mountain open views of Lake Sugomak at its foot and of Kyshtym. The main feature is the combination: the mountain, Lake Sugomak at its foot and the Sugomakskaya Cave on its slope form a territorial natural complex of three nature monuments — one outing can cover all three. Nearby are the Maryiny Slyozy spring and the rocky outlier Golaya Sopka, about 50 metres high. The toponym is explained from the Bashkir 'hyu' (water) and 'qomaq' (rat) — 'water rat'; alternatives via Old Turkic male names exist but, as researchers note, fit the language norms worse. The ascent is easy, with the trail starting from the outskirts of Kyshtym.

How to get there

About 90 km from Chelyabinsk or 150 km from Yekaterinburg to Kyshtym; the trail starts from the western outskirts, 40–60 minutes up.

Best season

Year-round; the ascent is slippery on icy patches in winter.

Travel tips & stories

  • Build a loop route: mountain → cave → lake — three monuments in half a day.

  • The summit has open rocks — avoid it in wind and rain.

  • At the Maryiny Slyozy spring, drink only after checking the water quality.
