Annunciation Cathedral (Gorokhovets)

Gorokhovets is among the region’s oldest towns, on Russia’s historic settlements list. The Annunciation Cathedral on Shkolny Lane is a 1700 five-domed stone church built by merchant Semyon Ershov replacing a wooden predecessor. At the turn of the 17th–18th centuries Ershovs and Oparins rivalled in building: the cathedral stood sixty metres from the Oparins’ stone house and визуально dominated it. Two altars survive — Annunciation and side altar of St Macarius of Zheltovodsk. The cathedral is not a fully active parish; it is an architectural monument under restoration. Nearby — Alexander Nevsky chapel (1887). Gorokhovets rarely fits quick Golden Ring loops though the town is on UNESCO’s tentative list. Allow half a day: cathedral, Klyazma embankment, pontoon bridge to Знаменка and 17th-century merchant houses.
