Hermonassa–Tmutarakan Hillfort
The Hermonassa–Tmutarakan archaeological complex lies on Taman Bay in the northern part of Taman stanitsa (Temryuk District) and holds federal archaeological-heritage status. Its distinctive feature is nearly twenty-five centuries of continuous settlement: cultural layers reach 12–14 metres. The ancient polis of Hermonassa (from the 6th century BCE), Khazar and Old Russian Tmutarakan, then Ottoman and Russian Taman succeeded one another on the same cape. The monument covers about 35 ha; most of it lies under modern buildings, with a limited area open to visitors. It belongs to the Taman Museum Complex, a Felitsyn Museum-Reserve branch. Tickets for the hillfort are sold at the archaeological museum, Karl Marx St. 100; check hours on taman-museum.rf and Culture.ru. This is Taman archaeology, not a beach attraction — pair it with the archaeological museum and the Lermontov House-Museum to see beyond the wine-and-resort postcard.
