Hindiktig-Khol Lake

Hindiktig-Khol (Tuv. “lake with a navel”) is a large freshwater lake in south-western Tuva’s Mongun-Tayginsky kozhuun near the Altai border. Area about 66 km², dimensions roughly 14.9 × 8.6 km, elevation 2,305 m. Two central islands gave the lake its name. Origin is moraine-dammed: the south-west part is blocked by an ancient glacier moraine. Feed is mixed, mainly glacial; descriptions cite water clarity up to 20 m. The Mogen-Buren River drains toward the Great Lakes basin. Alpine marmots occur on shores; grayling, including large individuals, live in the lake. Commercial fishing operates locally. For travellers this is a demanding high-altitude route, not a roadside stop. The foot of Mongun-Taiga (3,976 m — Tuva’s highest point) makes the lake a natural acclimatisation base but not easy access. Respect local sacred attitudes toward the peak and do not assume a summit attempt without preparation and permits.
