Idrisovskaya Cave

Idrisovskaya Cave (also Kissyatash, Palace Cave, Krasnopolskaya) lies about a kilometre southeast of Idrisovo village in Salavatsky District, on the high left bank of the Yuryuzan River inside the Yangan-Tau geopark. The cliff is cut by window-like grottos with views over the river bend. It is a federal archaeology monument: Stone Age rock art (Idrisovo petroglyphs) is known in and on the rock. Early mentions go back to P. S. Pallas. Local legend links the shelter to Salavat Yulaev during the 1773–1775 Pugachev uprising — treat that as folklore, not proven fact; for the hero’s history the museum in Maloyaz is the better stop. The site needs no caving gear: a gravel road from the village leads to parking by the cliff, then a short climb. Do not confuse it with “Salavatskaya Cave” at Kalim-Uskan rock in Ishimbaysky District — a different place named after a film shoot. Kissyatash matters for both landscape and archaeology: its limestone windows frame the Yuryuzan, but the rock art is not a backdrop for hands-on photography. Not every trace is obvious, and a faint image is never a reason to touch, trace or outline the surface. The climb is short, yet the river cliff remains natural and partly unfenced. Visit in dry weather, allow time for a calm look, and keep children close on the rocky section. In a Salavatsky District itinerary it fits naturally between the road and Maloyaz: the museum provides historical context while the cave opens the river valley. Tell the Salavat story as local tradition, not as a substitute for archaeological evidence. The practical details in this card are part of the route, not a formality: they help match the season, road and visitor experience. They are not a promise of constant access, because natural conditions, protection rules and institutional schedules can change. Before setting out, save an offline map, check the weather and leave time for the return. Rock art by the entrance and on ledges was recorded by twentieth-century local historians and archaeologists; pigment and stone wear from contact, so outlining figures for photos is unacceptable. Do not touch the rock art and stay on the path at the cliff edge: the value is the Yuryuzan landscape and surviving pigment, not fitted infrastructure.
