Mushroom Rocks near Ilyich Hamlet
In Otradnensky District of Krasnodar Krai, about two kilometres upstream from Ilyich hamlet along the Urup River, stand oddly shaped rock pillars — the local “mushroom rocks.” One sits on the tourist path by Baraban Cliff; another is on the left side of a small gorge. Ilyich is a far eastern corner of the krai near the Karachay-Cherkess border: asphalt leads from Otradnaya via Peredovaya, and the quiet nature and archaeology of the district cluster around the hamlet. The forms result from weathering of layered foothill rock; nearby are canyons, window-like grottoes and Urup gorge cliffs. Regional press and local routes list the mushrooms with Baraban Cliff and Trubny Canyon as a day walk without resort infrastructure — not a Sochi postcard or mass beach. Combine the mushrooms with neighbouring Ilyich stops if you wish, but allow time: elevation change and sparse waymarks reward a slow pace and an offline map.
