Ilyichevskoye Hillfort

The federal archaeological reserve “Ilyichevskoye Hillfort” lies near Ilyich hamlet in Otradnensky District, on a watershed ridge between the Urup, Gamovka and Kuva — several kilometres south of the hamlet. Heritage registers also list it as the Ilyich hillfort with ruined Christian churches and rock cemeteries. The hillfort itself covers about 90 ha, with a wider complex of fortifications, settlements, roads and burial grounds. Excavations (including N. V. Anfimov in the 1960s and V. N. Kaminsky in the early 1990s) date the site to the 9th–13th centuries as an urban-type Alan centre on the North-West Caucasus. It stood on the Darin branch of the Silk Road as a major trade, craft and military hub. Remains of several Christian churches, pit-houses and cemeteries have been recorded. Teacher-local historian M. N. Lozhkin and his pupils brought the site to scholarly attention in 1962. Do not confuse it with the ancient settlement at Ilyich on the Taman Peninsula (Temryuk District). Here in the Otradnensky foothills you meet stone walls, church foundations and mountain landscape with little on-site museum service — respect the protected status and leave finds in place.
