Ivolginsky Datsan
Ivolginsky Datsan stands in Verkhnyaya Ivolga village, 20 km from Ulan-Ude. Founded in 1945, it became Russia's Buddhist spiritual centre after monastic life resumed. The grounds hold temples, stupas, teaching buildings and the abbot's residence. The main relic is the XII Khambo Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov's necropolis — his body is kept in a special temple on a set pilgrimage schedule. An active monastery: services, monk training and major Buddhist festivals. Visitors must follow rules — modest dress, silence in temples, photos only where permitted. Nearby are a Buryat Buddhism history museum and shops with books and offerings. A living religious centre with daily routine, not an open-air ethnographic park. Often included on a first day in Buryatia; allow half a day before lakes and valleys.

Bus or minibus from Ulan-Ude to Verkhnyaya Ivolga; ~1 km walk from the stop to the datsan gates.
