Izborsk Fortress and Slovenskoye Lake

Izborsk stands on a high hill in Pechory District, thirty kilometres from Pechory town. A 14th–16th-century stone fortress with towers and walls rises above Slovenskoye Lake and the valley. Truvor's Hillfort nearby is tied to legends of the first princes. Panoramic views over the lake, forest and fields from the walls. Inner courtyard, building remains, museum displays in towers. One of the few surviving north-west stone castles — but no resort infrastructure: a village at the foot, a few cafés and guest houses. Slovenskoye Lake lies below the walls; paths lead down. Locals swim in summer, ice fish in winter. Clear water, mixed shores — sand, grass, stone. Visit the same day as Pskov-Caves Monastery — a short drive between them. Allow 2–3 hours for the fortress and lake walk; for early history and borderland landscape. A medieval culture festival in September brings crowds — livelier village, busier than usual.
