Mountain lake in a dormant volcano caldera on the Okhotsk Range north slope — the main natural goal of Kolyma expeditions, not a day trip.

Jack London Lake

Jack London Lake sits at roughly 800 m in a caldera on the Okhotsk Range's northern slope, in the upper Kolyma basin. Clear water, cedar taiga shores and a long narrow mirror visible from nearby hills. Named after the writer's story, not a personal visit — Kolyma anglers and expedition teams treat it as the region's benchmark mountain lake. Grayling and lenok fishing is common; check fishing and conservation rules before departure, as parts of the basin fall under protected regimes. Reachable only by seasonal dirt road from Yagodnoye and Susuman or by river with an organised group. Winter access is by snowmobile on stable ice with local guides who know winter-road and ford conditions on tributaries. No permanent shore infrastructure — tent, stove and fuel are essential. Weather shifts within hours — fog, rain and pass snow are possible even in July; warm layers and waterproof boots are not optional. Usually combined in multi-day Okhotsk north-slope routes with Silakh, Kalandr and neighbouring passes. An expedition format with food reserves, satellite comms and several taiga nights without city contact.

How to get there

From Magadan via Yagodnoye and Susuman on the seasonal road or by river with an organised group.

Best season

July–August when the seasonal road is passable

Travel tips & stories

  • The name is literary — the writer never visited Kolyma; useful if you are guiding a group.

  • Book transport and guides in Magadan — solo trips without northern road experience are risky.

  • Satellite comms or a beacon beat mobile coverage on shore.

  • Dense mosquitoes and ticks in summer taiga — repellent and clothing checks after every outing.

  • Pass snow is possible even in July — allow a spare day in your schedule.
