Kalim-Uskan Rock
Kalim-Uskan Rock in Ishimbaysky District is a limestone mass about 8 km of dirt road from Makarovo village, on the way to Kuk-Karauk Waterfall. The Sikaza River runs at the foot: in spring it can block the cave entrance in the cliff; in summer the bed often sinks underground. About five metres up is Salavatskaya Cave — named after the film Salavat Yulaev, not a proven stay by the hero (his legendary cave is Idrisovskaya on the Yuryuzan). The summit gives valley views; wet ledges need care. The rock is a geological landmark of the area and a natural first stop on the Makarovo loop before Kuk-Karauk — without climbing Toratau shihan. Kalim-Uskan is a tall limestone cliff, about 70 m high, and is best understood as a rock landscape rather than a single cave stop. Salavatskaya Cave received its name from filming for a Salavat Yulaev movie; the cinematic name is not evidence that the hero stayed there. Sikaza is seasonal: in high water it may run at the foot of the cliff and block a safe approach, while in dry periods some flow goes underground. Do not cross it merely because it looks small on a map. Keep away from wet ledges and loose sections, and do not attempt to climb to openings without experience. Bring a torch for a short stop, but never use open flame in the limestone cavity. The practical details in this card are part of the route, not a formality: they help match the season, road and visitor experience. They are not a promise of constant access, because natural conditions, protection rules and institutional schedules can change. Before setting out, save an offline map, check the weather and leave time for the return. On site, use existing paths, respect residents and staff, and resolve any access doubt by choosing the safer option. That keeps a visit meaningful without adding pressure to a vulnerable natural or cultural place. Upstream of the rock lies the Sikaza geological section, important for the Devonian–Carboniferous boundary: even without diving into stratigraphy, it explains why the Makarovo loop is valued for more than views. In spring the ford by the cave can be deep; in summer the dry bed makes access easier. Do not confuse the film name “Salavatskaya” with Idrisovskaya Cave on the Yuryuzan.
How to get there
