Kara-Khol Lake (Tuva)

Kara-Khol is among Tuva’s most scenic lakes: an elongated sheet about 12 km long and 1.5 km wide in the Bay-Tayginsky kozhuun mountains at 1,461 m. Area is roughly 16.2 km² with a catchment near 1,430 km². The Monagy and Eldig-Khem rivers enter from the north; the Kara-Khol River flows out to the south. The lake holds regional nature-monument status and rarely appears in mass-market brochures — access takes time and a prepared vehicle. Shores mix forested sections and rocky outcrops; the southern tip, often seen in photos, reads clearly from approach points. Routes are planned from Bay-Tayga settlements or via Western Sayan passes; winter and shoulder seasons make dirt sections the main constraint. Allow one or two days with camping or a local guest house — not a quick turn-off from a highway. Fishing and photography are typical reasons to visit, but monument status calls for careful behaviour at the water. Neighbouring Eldig-Khem and Monagy valleys fit naturally into one cluster without returning to federal roads.
