Kargopol

Kargopol stands on hills by Lake Lacha and Lake Kargopolskoye — one of the oldest towns of the Russian North. Salt mining and trade with central Russia from the 15th century; stone and wooden churches, merchant houses and fragments of old layout remain. Cathedral ensemble and wooden churches on outskirts are main architectural landmarks. Some buildings active, some museum — confirm visiting hours and tours ahead, especially off-season. Several hours by road from Arkhangelsk or Vologda; paved access year-round. Hotels, cafés and shops — rare service plus authentic fabric for northern depth. Base for Kenozero and nearby lakes or a standalone goal for stone and wood architecture fans. Quiet in winter, more tourists and fairs in summer. Allow at least a day for the centre and one nearby wooden church. Cobbles and paths slip in rain — practical footwear required.
