Kenozero National Park

Kenozero National Park protects a lake-and-river system in northwest Arkhangelsk Oblast. Small villages with wooden churches, chapels and bell towers on shores survive as a coherent rural landscape — rare in the North. Trips start from Sumsky Posad or by water — boats link islands and shore villages. Foot trails run between lakes through conifer forest; summer brings dense mosquitoes, autumn mushrooms and short daylight. Conservation rules apply: some sites are tour-only or need pre-approved routes. Confirm tickets, permits and visitor-centre hours before travel — peak season groups book ahead. Kenozero pairs nature with living villages — people still farm and help preserve heritage. Not a decorative ethnographic park but a working region with seasonal roads and weather dependence. Plan two or three days with guesthouse or lakeside stays. Food reserves, repellent and waterproof boots are essential; signal deep in the park is unreliable.
