Khamar-Daban
Khamar-Daban runs along Baikal's southeastern shore from Slyudyanka to the Gusinoozyorsk steppe. It separates the Baikal basin from inner Buryat valleys. Peaks exceed 2,000 m; cedar and spruce taiga on slopes, rocky ridges above. Harsh winters; snow lingers on north faces until May. Several road and rail passes cross the range; day hikes from Baikalsk and Slyudyanka to lakes and waterfalls are popular. Treaded footwear and water are essential. Not one national park with a single ticket — varied protection regimes. Some trails cross forest fund; fires and camps only where allowed. Contrasts with southern steppe — wetter, cooler, denser forest. Plan several days with nights in Baikalsk or Gusinoozyorsk.
