Lake Khantayskoye

Lake Khantayskoye (Great Khantayskoye) covers 822 km² on the south-west Putorana margin at 68°16′57″N 90°29′40″E. ~80 km long, 25 km wide, elevation 65.8 m, max depth 420 m, volume ~82 km³. Tectonic-glacial basin linked by a channel to Maloye Khantayskoye where the Khantayka River rises — a Yenisei tributary. Khantayskoye Ozero settlement (former Taimyr) on the south-west shore ties to Ust-Khantayskaya HPP. Ice and navigation are highly seasonal; tourist access is limited by HPP infrastructure and remoteness. A depth showcase, not a beach resort. Photos from permitted points only; no entry to plant technical zones. Combine with Dyupkun and Talnikovy routes only via organisers.

How to get there

Taimyr District, Khantayskoye Ozero settlement (~240 km from Dudinka). Aviation/winter road per local arrangements.

Best season

July–August for shore access; winter specialist transport

Travel tips & stories

  • 420 m depth — no swimming at unmarked spots; water is cold.

  • HPP zone — do not photograph plant assets without a pass.

  • Channel to Maloye Khantayskoye — landmark for hydrology, not novice boating.

  • Weak signal — satellite phone for groups.

  • Ice until late June — do not plan early navigation.
