Glinka Estate (Khmelita)

The Glinka Estate Museum-Reserve stands in Khmelita village, Vyazemsky District — where Mikhail Glinka spent childhood and youth, composer of A Life for the Tsar and Ruslan and Lyudmila. The estate retains a typical Smolensk gubernia manor house character. Ensemble includes the manor, wing, alleys and pond park; the house has memorial rooms, фортепьяно, family relics and exhibits on the composer's career. Concert hall hosts musical evenings and festivals. Khmelita is not a city-centre museum showcase but a rural estate among hills and fields. ~25 km from Vyazma on narrow but paved road. Allow half a day: house, park, walk to nearby churches. Book tours in season; school groups at weekends. Combine with Vyazma kremlin and Монастырщиной — musical and military threads of one route.
