Large forest massif in the oblast north — pines, bogs and protected species.
Khotynetsky Bor Reserve
Khotynetsky Bor is a forest and protected area in Khotynetsky District, Oryol Oblast, bordering Kursk and Bryansk oblasts. Pine and spruce woods, transition bogs and sand dunes are rare in central Russia. Partly in the protected areas system; visit rules apply. Eco-trails at the forest edge; deep woods for prepared groups. The bor contrasts steppe and forest Oryol land: different microclimate, mushrooms, berries (where allowed), birds. Popular locally; few distant tourists. Base in Khotynets settlement or edge villages; modest infrastructure. Car recommended. Combine with northern oblast travel — Khotynets ~120 km from Oryol but unique for the region. Ticks — repellent and light clothing. No fires outside designated spots.
