Kolyma River Valley

The Kolyma rises in the Okhotsk–Kolyma highlands and flows through taiga, tundra and mountains to the Okhotsk Sea. Villages, bridges and seasonal landings line the valley linking Susuman, Omolon and northern districts to Magadan. Summer cargo and passenger traffic; winter ice crossings and winter roads along the bank. Schedules depend on water, ice and weather — ask local skippers, not last year's timetables. Shores alternate flood meadows, rocky spits and larch forest. Cold, fast water on rapids — swimming in rapids is dangerous; life jackets on boats are mandatory. Travel along the valley shows everyday northern life — fishers, barge drivers, prospectors on remote reaches. A working landscape, not a museum format. Routes run from Susuman toward Omolon and Okhotsk Range lakes depending on water level and food reserves. Dense floodplain mosquitoes in summer — repellent and nets help.

How to get there
