Kostenki Archaeological Museum

The Kostenki Archaeological Museum-Reserve lies in Khokholsky District at Kostenki village on the right bank of the Don. The complex combines museum displays with ancient campsite monuments known since the late 19th century for flint tools, ornaments and dwelling traces. Kostenki sites are among Russia's key Upper Paleolithic landmarks. Dwelling remains, flint points, mammoth-bone figurines and other materials reconstruct Ice Age hunter life. The museum presents finds and field excavation methods. The exhibition centres on real dig materials, not decorative reconstructions: cases with tools, animal bones, dwelling models and stratigraphy explanations. Useful for visitors interested in the scientific context, not only mammoth bones. The museum surroundings are Don terrace landscape: meadows, ravines, river views. Some routes are outdoors; summer brings tours and educational programmes for schools and tourists.
