Kozelsk Monasteries

Kozelsk stands on the Zhizdra River 50 km from Kaluga; known since the 12th century in the Golden Ring of Ugra cluster. The city symbol is the kremlin earthen rampart on a high hill. Optina Pustyn is one of Russia's major monasteries, famous for elders and 19th-century spiritual literature. Visits are regulated: modest dress, silence, monastery rules. Stone building, trading rows and descent to the river fill the town. Kozelsk is a good base for Ugra Park and Nikola-Lenivets (~40 km). Monasteries and kremlin are separate route points — allow half a day for both including services schedule. Modest food and lodging — guesthouses and small cafés; book weekends ahead. On pilgrimage holidays Optina parking is limited — arrive early.
