A Pinega town with wooden architecture and a river landing — a hub deep in Pinega district.

Krasnoborsk on the Pinega

Krasnoborsk stands on the Pinega as one of few towns deep in Pinega district. Wooden houses, a church and a landing for summer motor boats remain. The town grew around timber and river economy — log driving, forestry, fishing. Today a base for trips along the river to caves, Krasnaya Gorka museum and White Sea villages. Several hours from Arkhangelsk or Kotlas; shops and signal available, simpler service than the oblast centre. Open in winter but some dirt branches close. Good overnight between Pinega route sections — after karst sites and before the coast. Half a day for centre and embankment; add another day for a river or road loop.

How to get there

By road from Arkhangelsk or Kotlas via Pinega to Krasnoborsk.

Best season

June–September for river routes; winter follows transport schedules

Travel tips & stories

  • Fill the tank in town — petrol scarce further along the river.

  • Confirm boat schedules at the landing — season-dependent.

  • Dense riverside mosquitoes — repellent from evening.

  • Book lodging in summer — tourists pass through.

  • Rain washes dirt tracks to caves — ask locals.
